VCH Gloucestershire Academy

The VCH Gloucestershire Academy is the name adopted in 2013 to describe the editors working on contract and the local history volunteers who are collaborating to research and write volumes in the Gloucestershire series of the Victoria County History.

VOLUMES IN PROGRESS

14
Yate and the Sodburys

15
Cheltenham

16
Cirencester

Eleven volumes of Gloucestershire history have been published thus far. Our ambition is to cover the whole county with detailed parish histories. It is painstaking work. In the map on the right the lighter grey areas of the county are currently covered by VCH volumes, while the darker areas show the three areas where we are working at present: the Yate and Sodbury area of South Gloucestershire and the towns of Cheltenham and Cirencester with their surrounding parishes. The white areas show the parts of the county yet to be started. Much remains to be done, but we continue to make steady progress.

Check the status of YOUR parish.

Each volume has its own group of volunteers, although we also hold regular meetings of the whole academy in Gloucester. Volunteers are welcome, whatever their level of experience and however much time they have to commit to the project. Training in research skills and methods is available and our editors are available to provide support.

Read draft texts for our Cheltenham and Cirencester volumes.

Much of the research takes place at Gloucestershire Archives, although a number of sources for volume 14 are in Bristol and volunteers can also work at home. We also welcome help with our fundraising.

NEWSLETTER

We produce a newsletter twice a year, which keeps supporters up-to-date with the progress of the project. It is the newsletter that our researchers and volunteers share their latest discoveries.
